	The Sunday Times is Britain's biggest and bestselling quality newspaper. It consists of five broadsheet sections, three tabloid sections and three magazines published every Sunday.

	Entry description

	The Sunday Times iPad app has set the benchmark in the world of apps. From its design, use of rich media and interactive features, The Sunday Times app has been universally acclaimed from its launch - and continues to add new features and functionality every month. With every story from every newspaper and magazine section, the depth and breadth of the Sunday Times app is unparalleled across the world. The app includes stunning 360-degree photography, live news reports and sports results, exclusive video and interactive graphics.

	The basic idea of your application project

	The Sunday Times app uses the Woodwing framework edition of its digital magazine system. Challenges included: catering for a large multi-section newspaper within a single app; handling subscriptions integrated with the Times+ subscription system; implementing progressive downloads so content could be read while a section downloads in the background. The Sunday Times iPad app extends the value of the Times+ digital subscription giving subscribers access to the Times and Sunday Times websites plus iPad editions. There is also a single issue iTunes purchase available for non-subscribers.

The implementation

The Sunday Times iPad application was launched on December 10th, 2010.
The application was developed by the editorial teams working across print and online in combination with the product development team, marketing, commercial and Technology departments.
The award-winning print graphics team has extended its skills to create interactive 3D models, 360-degree rotating cars and html-based timeline graphics.

Results of the application implementation

At launch, the Sunday Times was the number one downloaded app in the UK store for all apps. On Sundays it is regularly the number 1 highest-grossing iTunes app in the UK charts from the single issue sales alone (excluding the subscriber numbers). Over 30,000 issues are downloaded every Sunday and more than three million sections have been downloaded since launch.
Times+ digital subscriptions grew from 50,000 to over 100,000 in the six months following the Sunday Times iPad launch.
