  General information about the publication
   24sata is the No.1 media house and the strongest multimedia brand in Croatia. With its content it reaches over 1,4 million people every day, through all its media platforms: 24sata daily newspaper as the print edition, and its digital platforms: the web-site www.24sata.hr, mobile platform m.24sata.hr and the 24sata News television accessible via web-site tv.24sata.hr but also the MAXtv channel.
With the average number of over 1,1 million readers every day and the average print circulation of 220.000 copies i.e. av. sold circulation of 163.505 copies a day (2009), the print edition of 24sata represents No.1 daily newspaper in Croatia (leading both in readership and circulation) and a single national newspaper, covering all Croatian regions and all targets groups.
At the same time, the web-site 24sata.hr is the leading Croatian news site (with 200,000 unique clients daily and over 81 million page impressions monthly) and ranked among Top 5 web-sites in Croatia. It provides real time publishing of news due to the integrated newsroom.
In 2009 the 24sata company launched 2 new niche sites:
1.ZdravaKrava.hr – shortly becoming the leading Croatian online guide through vitality and awarded as the best Croatian site in the category “Sports, health, nutrition”, with over 120.000 unique users and over 1,0 million page views monthly;
2.Pametnakuna.hr - the leading Croatian site for personal finances, with 91.000 unique users and 400.000 page views monthly
Simple, intuitive, short news from home and abroad, 0-24...24/7, in a modern TV form on the computer screen, accessible via web-site tv.24sata.hr and the MAXtv platform, represent the main characteristic of the 24sata News television, attracting over 245.000 viewers every day.
m.24sata.hr is the first Croatian mobile news portal offering latest news, showbusiness titles and sports results whenever or wherever, extended recently with a new product – 24sata iPhone application as the most downloaded news application.
Among numerous other awards, 24sata have been awarded as the Best Buy Croatian Newspaper in 2009, offering the value for money among Croatian daily newspapers.

  Entry description
   Pictures of playgrounds that jeopardise children's safety.
  The basic idea of your cross-media local project
   After series of children accidents on playgrounds, one of which resulted in death of a 10-year old girl, it became obvious that most playgrounds do not fulfill even the basic safety standards. So, 24sata has called its readers to send pictures (per post, e-mail, MMS, video) of such dangerous playgrounds in order to initiate the solving of this problem in local communities. Our readers sent us, as User Generated Content (UGS), dozens of photographs. Some of them were published in our print editions (both in paid and free afternoon editions) and digital editions.
We targeted our existing readers, who have recognized 24sata as a socially sensitive media and use it as a channel to influence changes.
But we also wanted to sensitise the parents and the other members of (local) communities to be more aware of the children's safety and to encourage them to be more proactive in resolving the problems of their local communities - to participate in creating of a story and, by doing so, to influence the local decision makers.

  The implementation
   We started the project in June 2009 running it for about two weeks. The idea was born in News department of the 24sata integrated newsroom and it was carried out mainly by the UGC department.
The editors in UGC department made a selection of photos that were publishing-worthy and passed them out to the News department in order to make print (both in paid and free editions) and web, as well as video reports.

  Results of the local project implementation
   We received dozens of photos, but more importantly, people became aware of the problem. Even today, one year after the fatal accident, readers send us photos of dangerous children playgrounds, and we still publish the ones that are news-worthy.
