  Project description
In Denmark, as in other Western countries, young people are losing interest in science. That led Morgenavisen Jyllands-Posten to create a national project – the Galathea 3 Expedition – to recreate popular interest in science. Equipped to fit modern communication demands, the expedition was to follow in the wake of two former Danish research expeditions, the Galathea 1 (1845-47) and the Galathea 2 (1950-52).
The basic idea of our project
In 2000, Morgenavisen Jyllands-Posten conceived the idea of the Galathea 3 Expedition – an Earth-circumnavigating scientific marine expedition disseminating research results for the Danes to share, via the media and on-line, the curiosity and joy of researchers on board. The expedition was also meant to be a captivating adventure with the vessel making for the remotest areas of the world – to communicate with an extremely broad target group from scientific nerds to ordinary people interested in science.
The project was in the pipeline for four years, but in March 2004 the Danish Prime Minister was attracted to the project. Morgenavisen Jyllands-Posten transferred its rights and its spadework to a foundation, which raised the required 26 million Euros for the project out of private and government funds.
HRH Crown Prince Frederik was the patron of the foundation.
“Vædderen”, (Danish for ram), a 112 meter long Danish frigate, was rebuilt for the Galathea 3 – fully furnished with state-of-the-art research equipment in flexible containers, broadband satellite Internet access and room for 99 crew members, scientists and media representatives.
August 11, 2006, the expedition put to sea after a large number of research projects had been selected by the relevant Danish research authorities.
Morgenavisen Jyllands-Posten boasted the largest media team (4 persons) on board - reporters, graphic designers, multimediaproducers, photographers and teachers. Other reporters from the newspaper followed the expedition vessel on land to meet adventure that way. Morgenavisen Jyllands-Posten co-operated with various partners and sponsors.

  The Implementation
Jyllands-Postens Galathea 3-coverage was rooted in the JP Explorer Project Organisation, which has planned and launched 20 other journalistic expeditions. The organisation coordinated coverage by media channels and was behind our logistical plans.
Before the expedition, Morgenavisen Jyllands-Posten had held Denmark’s largest contest for school students for a stay on board the vessel. A large part of the dissemination of information via the www.galathea.nu was focused on Internet-based educational courses and interaction between schools and vessel.

  Project results
On 25 April 2007, after circumnavigating the world for 257 days, the expedition vessel returned to Denmark – the scientists bringing with them recently recovered species and samples for many years. About 500 researchers, media representatives and crew members participated for briefer or longer periods. The project site of Morgenavisen Jyllands-Posten had six million page views during the expedition and crewmembers participating in the expedition blogged from the site.
After the return of the vessel, Ramboell Management, an independent consultancy group, conducted a survey of the attitude of Danes towards the Galathea Expedition:
82.8% had heard about the Galathea 3
58.1% followed the expedition on a regular basis
21.7% took an increased interest in research and science through the expedition project
30.8% of respondents with children discussed the expedition with them
48.9% find that the project will enhance the interest of young people in science
36.3% find that the project will make more young people undertake science studies.
