El Mundo Deportivo is celebrating its centenary in 2006, a year that also marks the tenth anniversary of our website, www.elmundodeportivo.es. The World Cup in Germany was the perfect occasion at which to celebrate these milestones, and the paper deployed all its resources to cover the event in an accurate and professional manner, all set off by a great design.
In our printed edition, the structure of sections was completely adapted to the competition. The daily edition opened with the World Cup and new formats were created to arrange the news of each group in the initial group phase, and then of the knockout phase. The World Cup took over the bulk of the paper’s pages whilst the competition was running, relegating other sporting events to a background role. The full-page editorial opened our daily coverage with a comprehensive analysis of the previous day, opening the way for the rest of the news written by a team of correspondents in situ in Germany: Francesc Aguilar, Cristina Cubero, Manuel Segura and Juan Gato, accompanied by photographer José A. García Sirvent. These journalists concentrated on following the Spanish team, which was based in Kamen, but also drafted articles, reports and interviews relating to the rest of the teams, gradually focusing more and more on those that were progressing in the tournament and turning into favourites for the title.
As regards our digital edition, www.elmundodeportivo.es opted for a design created specifically for the event which would bring together the most relevant news, updated minute by minute at a glance, and would also give importance to the spectacular nature of the images that a World Cup always produces. The competition dominated our homepage with sections for each group and one very special section devoted to the Spanish team. We also increased the visual impact of images, with a column offering the best photographs of the day.
The news was accompanied by all kinds of additional data: results, classifications, the line-up for the knockout phase, information on the stadiums, a photo gallery, etc. And the interactive character of the site was promoted at all times, by means of fora and daily surveys. |
