The World Cup coverage for the Manchester Evening News was distributed on three main media - print, online and video.
Because coverage of the actual games and results was so widespread, we decided to concentrate on the fan's experience of the tournament with our offering.
Our World Cup section contained all the match results and debates around the games but in addition we sent a reporter out to Germany with the fans to blog his experiences.
Armed with a mobile phone camera and a laptop, Mike Whalley blogged his way around the games, the bars and the tourist sights which the fans were experiencing.
Some of the blogs that first appeared online were then also used later in print in a daily slot on the sports pages with cross referencing to the online product.
We also set up a moblog for users so that they could share their World Cup moments with a wider audience. While some users sent us their pictures from Germany, the vast majority showed how they were celebrating the tournament at home by decorating their houses, children and even pets.
A selection of these pictures were also used in print, again with suitable promotion of the online service.
Finally we arranged for daily video reports from Germany during the early stages on the tournament. This was updated twice daily and pomoted throughout the print and online products. |
