Web bonus: CashDaily - Switzerland

CashDaily is the free business daily launched in September 2006 by Ringier Publishing Switzerland.

Ringier Publishing Switzerland launched the free business newspaper CashDaily on 8 September 2006. The company began distributing 100,000 copies through more than 1100 kiosk newsstands in German-speaking Switzerland with a goal of reaching 1 million people.

“We said that it should be free in order to obtain a wide reach straight away and corner the market,” says Thomas Trüb, member of the management of Ringier Publishing Switzerland. “We organised it as a pilot project for the entire Ringier group. The objective is to create a multimedia platform, which is how we see the future of the newspaper industry.”

As such, Cash Daily was designed to combine the advantages of a daily paper with those of the Internet, as well as to provide audio and video reports and mobile services.

> Business model: Free publication with a large circulation aimed at gaining a slice of the advertising market. As noted above, CashDaily is also available on a variety of channels in addition to the print product, such as Internet and mobile as well as TV. At the time of launch, Ringier stated that “the Swiss business platform Cash individually addresses new target groups through new advertising forms.”

> Staffing: Ringier is the largest media group in Switzerland, and has already been producing the weekly business title, Cash, for that market for some time, so numerous synergies are in place, but CashDaily also has a dedicated editiorial team of 16 members.
