From Vienna to Hamburg
Being the continent where printing was invented, Europe still has some traditions attached to newspaper production. Market forces and technological development brought changes and challenges which now, more than ever, are of interest for those keen to understand how traditional printers overcame challenges, sustained and improved quality and achieved success by automation and standardisation solutions.
An ideal complement to a visit to Expo. A unique opportunity to see installed and running some of the latest innovations an ideas in printing. Also opportunity to meet professionals who have used creativity and technology in better use of the newspaper printing presses. Also planned a visit to a printing press manufacturer as well as a laboratory for materials testing, covering an ample aspect of newspaper printing today.

Monday 27th September 2010
Vienna
Arrival during the morning for one night accommodation at Vienna.
During the afternoon we will visit Mediaprint Zeitungs- und Zeitschriften-verlag Ges.m.b.H. & Co. KG which operates in three sites in Austria. A high degree of automation makes possible for an economical production at favourable prices
Mediaprint prints approximately 18 million newspaper copies weekly in its three sites. It prints the daily newspapers " Crowns Zeitung" , " Kurier" , " The Standard" and " Heute" as well as various occasional products, besides the ones on daily topics. Each week the three plants use over 1.500 tons of newsprint, processes more than 30,000 plates and about 28,000 kg of color.

Vienna – Linz – Munich/Augsburg
Departing by train to Linz to visit ÖON Druckzentrum (printing plant for the Oberösterreichischen Nachrichten newspaper - creativity in new products using newspaper printing presses) and from then on to Munich or Augsburg for two nights accommodation
The Oberösterreichischen Nachrichten (Upper Austrian News) was created on 11 June 1945. The paper has a strong regional presence with variations between the xis regions of Upper Austria. The printing edition according to Austrian edition control (ÖAK) is of 138.746 copies. Of it 99,959 copies are sold directly, further 4,300 in the wholesale. The printing plant is known for its innovative design as a building as well as for the creativity and innovation in creating and marketing new products besides the normal editions of the OÖNachrichten.

Munich/Augsburg
Visiting Manroland factory followed by a visit to Augsburger Allgemeine (workflow integration, soft proof, mailroom products) printing plant.
The Augsburger Allgemeine Zeitung is a major German regional daily newspaper published since 1945. The newspaper was first published on 30 October 1945 under the name of Schwäbische Landeszeitung, under the initiative of Curt Frenzel. After Curt Frenzels death in 1970, his daughter Ellinor Holland continued the newspaper that was renamed to Augsburger Allgemeine on 1 November 1959.[5] The newspaper and publishing company are still fully owned by the Holland family and now managed by the third generation. In the second quarter of 2008, the newspaper sold 344,537 copies.

manroland AG with its production sites in Offenbach, Augsburg, and Plauen employs almost 8,000 people and has annual sales of some Euro 1,7 billion with an export share of approximately 80 percent (fiscal year 2008).
Web offset presses for newspapers and high-quality commercial printing of brochures, catalogs, magazines, supplements, and books are manufactured at the Augsburg site (founded 1845).

Würzburg
By train to Würzburg for one night accommodation.Visiting KBA factory followd by a visit to Main-Post (Commander CT, compact press as an extension to an existing Commander press, automatic plate change).
The Main-Post group of newspapers – a part of the Georg von Holtzbrinck publishing group since 1992 – is the most important newspaper publisher in Germany's Mainfranken economic region.
When Richter printworks of Wuerzburg published the Wuerzburger Generalanzeiger in 1883, later to be re-founded in 1945 under the name Main-Post, it laid the foundation for today's media house. Here Main-Post, Schweinfurter Tagblatt, Bote vom Hassgau, Volksblatt and Volkszeitung dailies are published. With average sales of some 145,000 copies, they reach half a million readers in the region. The markt and the mainSonntag are published every Wednesday and Sunday with a total circulation of approximately 580,000.

Hamburg
By train to Hamburg. Visiting Prinnovis (materials testing laboratory) followed by a visit to Axel Springer (newspaper and gravure printing plant, soft proof, new products from newspaper presses, closed loop control system. It has established commercial printing as a strong addition to inhouse newspaper printing).
Established by the publisher of the same name in 1946, today Axel Springer is Germany’s largest newspaper and third-largest magazine publisher as well as one of the leading European media enterprises. Its broad media portfolio encompasses successfully established multimedia brand families such as the BILD- and WELT-Groups. Axel Springer is also active in a total of 36 countries. The plant in Ahrensburg employs 430 people, and in 2009 consumed 64.000 tons of paper, 1.101 tons of ink and 973.621 printing plates printing a variety of newspapers from the Axel Springer Group. The site also prints magazines.

Please note rates include transportation in Austria and Germany during the tour as well as meals and accommodation. It does not, however, include flights to/from Vienna and/or Hamburg from/to the participant's country of origin
Please also note that, due to high occupancy rate at the hotels in Hamburg during the Expo as well as other hotels along the route we would need your registration by 06th September 2010. Registrations received after that date will only be accepted if we can still arrange and confirm accommodation and tickets

Cancellation Policy:
