Compatibility Profile for AdsML Bookings

AdsMLBookings covers a larger share of the booking workflow than IfraAdConnexion does; main additions include support for multimedia bookings and more flexible pricing structures. IfraAdConnexion 2.0 and AdsMLBookings 1.0 share the same messaging model, i.e. share the same message choreography. Note that prior versions of IfraAdConnexion had a different messaging model.

Financed by Ifra, CNet has developed a compatibility profile for AdsMLBookings, which defines a recommendation on how AdsMLBookings should be used to mimic the functionality of IfraAdConnexion 2.0. The compatibility profile is intended to support users that would like to migrate into the AdsML world without being forced to large application changes due to technical format differences. Also, the profile facilitates coexistence between AdsMLBookings and IfraAdConnexion applications in that systems may use both standards in parallel. An order system with IfraAdConnexion based XML import could also accept AdsMLBookings based order with minimal re-construction needed.

  What is AdConnexion?
AdConnexion, (a.k.a IfraAdConnexion) is a specification of how to perform XML based e-commerce between advertisers and ad-space providers such as newspapers.

Electronic order taking is an efficient tool to reduce errors and lower costs. It has been applied successfully in many business areas all over the world. AdConnexion was developed to enable also the newspaper industry to receive electronic bookings from their customers, leading to less and simpler administration, and less errors.

First developed by the Swedish Newspaper Publishers’ Association back in 2000, AdConnexion is now owned and maintained by Ifra. The latest update, version 2.0, was released in June 2004.

AdConnexion is capable of representing the main share of newspaper print advertising orders including data fields for colors, placements, sizes, prices, insertion dates and more. It is in production with thousands of bookings handled monthly, mainly in Scandinavia where most established systems vendors and other major players have support for electronic orders via AdConnexion, e.g. Kärkimedia, TietoEnator, NADA, Ritzau, Citygate, Mactive and Atex.

  The AdsML Consortium – AdsMLBookings
In 2003, Ifra was one of the founders of the AdsML Consortium together with NAA (Newspaper Association of America). While AdConnexion covered only newspaper print bookings, it was recognized a need for a more encompassing approach bringing together e-commerce standards for all aspect of advertising, from the early phases of planning through quotation, bookings and materials delivery to invoices and proof of publication.

Ifra has since then put all new development resources into the AdsML Consortium’s specification of next generation standards. With it’s June 2006 release, AdsML has released standards for message transfer, materials delivery, markup of classified ad content and in particular a new bookings standard called AdsMLBookings.

AdsMLBookings can be seen as natural successor to AdConnexion, with extended support for today’s business models including package bookings in several different media.

Ifra will continue to support AdConnexion for the foreseeable future, but no further development is planned as this is now part of the AdsML effort. Newcomers who intend to pursue e-commerce project are recommended to use AdsMLBookings in favor of AdConnexion. However, it is clear that in markets where already strong support for AdConnexion is in place, AdConnexion will be a living alternative for several years to come. Ifra will support current users, but also work to enable a smooth transition towards AdsMLBookings.
