It's really time für real-time - How social media opens up new opportunities in journalism, Koblenz
(Mittelrhein-Verlag GmbH, Germany).
Project name
It's really time für real-time - How social media opens up new opportunities in journalism:
General Publication Info
Rhein-Zeitung is a newspaper in a mainly rural area in Rhineland-Palatinate. Rhein-Zeitung was the first German regional paper that had established an online editorial departement. In 2009 Rhein-Zeitung was the first regional paper in Germany that offered a position for a social media editor. The social media editor is part of the paper's newsdesk and part of the online editorial staff consisting of three editors.
Implementation
We have taught our community that we are very keen on receiving hints, that we make use of them and give credit to the people who gave us the hints (if they want so). Our Community has learned that we increasingly start real-time actions like live streams und live blogs - and help us gaining a bigger audience by sharing and retweeting the info. Moreover we receive a lot of additional information very often when we are live-blogging.
Project results
Only by the help of the audience in social media we are able to start live actions spontaneously in a reasonable way. This enables us to reach a bigger - and helpful - audiance immediately.
