  Project name
Community Reports: Best community engagement through social media channels by Gulf News

  General Publication Info
Gulf News is the leading independent English daily in the UAE. It has an audited circulation of 130,000 (BPA). The newspaper effectively uses its Twitter account @GN Readers and Facebook page 'Gulf News Al Nisr Publishing UAE' for Community Reports to promote reader interactivity, generate unique content and empower its readers by pushing for transparency in governance.

  Implementation
Community Reports was launched over two years ago. In the UAE, there wasn't a clear redressal system for community issues that affect the daily lives of residents but would not be considered big enough for mainstream hard news coverage. The Community Reports addressed that gap. In the period we have published over 1000 community reports with a high resolution rate. It is now considered a source for local civic authorities and the government to get a feel and understanding of community issues. Several readers have been awarded by the authorities based on their reports published in Gulf News.
A community report topic/issue would be raised by a reader on either of our social media channels. This is then followed up and an editor from the Readers Desk team is assigned to it, who then works as a mentor. The community report is filed, along with pictures - it gets published on print, promoted on our social media channels and lives on the website (gulfnews.com) in a dedicated section. The multi-platform presence further pushes interactivity, brand loyalty, reader experience and leads to more content accompanied by community empowerment. Readers are also awarded each month by the newspaper based on their reports.

  Project results
We have a high resolution rate. We are referenced by civic bodies, many of who write letters to the newspaper, which are published. It is also a key source for bodies such as the traffic and road authorities to know what are the issues happening - our most recent multi-media package was a series of bus stops that were damaged and not serving users well. Natural areas get cleaned up and rules are established (speed limits set by the Police). A clear indication of the impact is the number of community reports and full page specials published over two years - more than a 1000. Also the awarding of residents for their reports by the authorities is another indicator. It has helped create a more cohesive, connected and socially-conscious community.
