nzherald.co.nz is the website of the New Zealand Herald, NZ's largest daily metropolitan newspaper.

  Implementation
A week after the Christchurch earthquake of February 22, 2011, I travelled to the eastern suburbs of Christchurch, where tens of thousands of people were living without electricity, toilets, and with limited access to food and water.
I spent time with volunteers at welfare centres, churches, and community aid stations. I also met blogger Peter Hyde - who had been campaigning to draw attention to the plight of "Refugee City" - at his Redcliffs home.
To tell this story as effectively as possible, given the state of Christchurch's mobile networks, electricity supply and roads, a blog was set up at Tumblr.com for text and video updates, directly from the residents who used me as their mouthpiece. The blog stood alone but it was added into nzherald.co.nz via the social media curation app Storify, alongside my tweets from Christchurch and a continuation of the info-sharing and crowdsourcing that began with Twitter immediately after the quake. This gave these people the audience of nzherald, and me the ease of transmitting via social media.

  Project results
The blog and tweets were successful in creating awareness of the challenges people faced in Christchurch's east and instrumental in mobilising people to get aid to those who needed it. We decided to use the blog twice more. I travelled to Christchurch again to blog through the national memorial service and then again in December 2011 to find out how people were facing Christmas in a time of economic and social instability.
We learned that we needed to go beyond what news organisations had already done with social media and find new ways to connect people with the news, and with each other. I was able to bring social media access to people who were offline because of the earthquake, creating a digital community from scratch and sharing their voices with the rest of New Zealand.
